Group Therapy

The first group that I facilitate is:

The Dream Group

Freud said that our dreams are the ‘Royal Road to the Unconscious’. By focusing on the symbols taken from the personal dreams of the participants of the group, this therapy group enables one to have a greater understanding of the hidden motives in their personal narratives and histories. The creative approach of exploring dreams psycho-dynamically enables the members to gain a deeper understanding of their own and of other’s personal experiences. Self-awareness is heightened by beneficial identification within the group.

The group meets for 8 x 3-hour sessions on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening starting at 6pm and for a final retreat day will be held on a Saturday where the participants of the group will have an opportunity to paint their dreams in silence and then share their experience of painting their personal dream images with the group.

The total fee for the 8 evening sessions and the Saturday retreat day is: £500.00.

The group is limited to a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 participants. Each participant must be in therapy or have a deep understanding of the therapeutic process and to be able to reflect upon themselves. For the benefit of the group process, the participants must be committed to the 8 weekly groups and the Saturday retreat day. The participants can be ‘clients in therapy’, ‘students of psychotherapy’ or ‘therapists’ themselves.

Included in the fee is the Group textbook: ‘Inner Work’ by Robert A. Johnson. Robert A. Johnson is a Jungian Anaylst. Hand-outs will be given taken from the two other texts referenced in the seminar: ‘Dream Psychology’ by Sigmund Freud and ‘Who is the Dreamer Who Dreams the Dream?’ by James S. Grotstein. Art material and paint will be supplied for the Saturday retreat day.

I have developed my own approach to group therapy which focusses on dreams as a form of self-expression. Expression through dreams is a creative approach which enables group members to gain a deeper understanding of themselves. Group members have experienced a strong improvement in self-confidence and self-esteem through the combination of reflection and expression/sharing and positive identification. This group has run successfully over a period of 5 years and 12 different groups.

Next Dream Group will be announced on this website. Please contact Margery at enquiries@margeryparsons-d-c-t-p.co.uk if interested in participating in The Dream Group.

The Second Group that I facilitate is:

The Psychotherapy Group for Men and Women (also know as Standard Group Therapy)

Group therapy is an opportunity for self-reflection through exchanges and experiences with several others in a confidential group setting.

Here is what can be experienced in group psychotherapy:

  • Participating in group psychotherapy helps people to understand their inner motivations in relationships with others.
  • By gaining a deeper understanding of their motivations, group members will be better able to negotiate their ways of relating.
  • The group experience is a meaningful adjunct to a personal therapy as it reveals group dynamics in a way that one-to-one cannot.
  • Personal transformation can take place through interpersonal relationships in the here and now of the group. The facilitators bear in mind the individual members’ original goals in joining the group.

The primary tasks of the group:

The aim of the group is to help the client become aware of unworkable patterns. Often familial settings, work situations and friendships are evoked in the group.

  • Members of the group are prepared to share their own personal issues
  • Members of the group are prepared to trust the process of the group to foster bonds of understanding and caring amongst the members.
  • Members of the group are prepared to witness others struggling to express their feelings, in an authentic and honest manner.
  • Members of the group endeavour to reflect upon their own personal patterns and how they affect others.

Guidelines for group practice:

  • Participants refrain from social contact outside the group so that all group experiences are explored exclusively in the group sessions
  • What occurs within the group is completely confidential with the single exception of personal therapy with one’s therapist in the privacy of a therapy session.
  • Sharing of information between the group therapists and the personal therapist will only occur with the client’s permission.

Requirements for joining the group:

  • At least 60 hours of individual therapy in a continuing therapeutic relationship
  • Ability to attend group regularly, including weekly 1-1/2 hour group meetings on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening, (next group to be confirmed) plus one out-of-town and one in-town weekend retreat
  • There is a 45-minute interview with Margery prior to acceptance to the group. There is no charge for this interview.
  • Time: 7:30 – 9:00pm on Tuesday or Wednesday evening (to be confirmed)

Group Fee

  • £250.00 per month for 10 months to be paid monthly, plus additional costs for weekend retreats
  • Please contact Margery at enquiries@margeryparsons-d-c-t-p.co.uk if interested in participating in The Group for Men and Women.
